The Key Strategic decisions are among the biggest decisions you can make to really move the needle for your company. The main form has 3 parts for evaluating Capacity Expansion: the first form has some deep questions to make you look deep and hard at current capacity (are you sure it isn’t enough?) and determining its actual capacity, establishing a base-case P&L for thinking about the alternatives. The second and third part of the form consider the three main typical alternatives for capacity expansion: outsourcing, same building but new technology, or new building and new technology; and pushes you to build P&LS for each for comparison with the base case. It also “forces” you to think if such a decision really makes a difference. The second form has a SWOT form where you’re encouraged to summarize the findings of the process above; the Strategy4Action framework peruses 23+ areas, including Capacity Expansion. The Key Strategic Decisions are the last of the 23 areas.
